Freed Israeli hostage Mia Schem in first interview since her release from Hamas captivity in Gaza
JERUSALEM (AP) — An Israeli woman who recently returned from captivity in the Gaza Strip says she was groped by her Palestinian kidnapper and lived in constant fear throughout the weeks she was held hostage.
Mia Schem, a 21-year-old dual citizen of Israel and France, was attending a music festival in southern Israel when Hamas militants burst across the border and raided the event site on Oct. 7. More than 300 people were killed and dozens taken hostage.
She was released on Nov. 30 during a weeklong cease-fire.
In an interview broadcast Friday on Israel’s Channel 13 TV, Schem said she was captured after she got out her friend’s burning car. She said her captor began touching her upper body inappropriately and only stopped after she screamed and he noticed that she had been shot in the arm and badly wounded.
“I started screaming, going crazy,” she said. “There were burnt vehicles, bodies.”
While in captivity, she was held in a house with a family and watched around the clock by the father, Schem said. She said his constant staring made her uncomfortable and fearful that he might try to harm her. The man’s wife did not like her and sometimes denied her food for days at a time, she said.
Israeli authorities have said that sexual violence was part of the Hamas rampage into southern Israel, and they accused the international community of playing down or ignoring the pain of the victims.
The Associated Press generally does not identify victims of sexual violence, but Schem spoke out publicly about her experience.
Schem made international headlines when Hamas released a video of her in captivity days after she was taken hostage. In the video, she lay in bed as someone bandaged her right arm, and she says she wants to go home. At the time, it was the first sign of life from the hostages.
Schem said she barely slept during her time as a hostage because she was so terrified, and that she also did not shower or receive any medications. She said her captor’s children occasionally came in to look at her “like I’m some animal in a petting zoo.”
Schem said she was taken from the home into a tunnel and held with other hostages during her final days in captivity.
During this time, she said she knew she would soon be released. Schem said she was kept with six or seven people in a small room and received just one piece of pita bread a day. She said she feels guilty because of the other hostages she left behind.
Schem broke down during the interview, saying she still has not come to terms with her return as she processes the ordeal. “I can’t get it out of my head,” she said

Mia Schem, une ex-otage franco-israélienne libérée le 30 novembre 2023, a fait sa première apparition à la télévision israélienne sur Channel 13 News le 29 décembre 2023 et a raconté son expérience de captivité de 55 jours par le Hamas à Gaza.
INTERNATIONAL - Mia Schem, qui a été captive du Hamas pendant 55 jours avant d’être libérée à la faveur d’un cessez-le-feu temporaire le 30 novembre dernier, a pris la parole publiquement pour la première fois pour parler de sa détention dans la bande de Gaza.
Elle s’est confiée lors d’une interview à la Treizième chaîne, chaîne de télévision israélienne, dont des extraits ont été dévoilés ce jeudi 28 décembre en attendant que l’intégralité de l’entretien soit diffusée vendredi 29 décembre 2023.
Elle explique vouloir prendre la parole pour « dire la vérité » sur ce qu’elle a « vécu là-bas ». « J’ai vécu un holocauste », déclare-t-elle. « J’étais par terre, couverte de sang, j’ai crié que j’avais perdu ma main [...] quelqu’un a commencé à toucher le haut de mon corps, puis sorti de nulle part quelqu’un m’a tiré par les cheveux. On m’a mis dans une voiture et nous sommes allés à Gaza », raconte-t-elle.
La jeune femme de 21 ans, qui porte un bandage au bras, évoque aussi l’opération qu’elle a subie, sans anti-douleurs : « j’étais comme une bête dans un zoo [...] j’ai failli m’étouffer avec mes propres pleurs ».
Quant à sa détention en elle-même, elle explique avoir été retenue dans une chambre plongée dans le noir et s’être rendu compte qu’elle se trouvait dans la maison d’une famille palestinienne. Selon elle, toute la famille était « impliquée avec le Hamas, y compris les femmes et les enfants ». Elle accuse ainsi tous les Palestiniens d’être des terroristes.
« Je me suis demandé “pourquoi suis-je détenue dans une maison familiale ?” “Pourquoi y a-t-il des enfants et une femme ici ?” », poursuit-elle.
129 otages toujours retenus à Gaza
Quelque 250 personnes ont été prises en otage lors de l’attaque sanglante du Hamas sur le sol israélien le 7 octobre, qui a fait environ 1.140 morts, selon un décompte de l’AFP à partir des derniers chiffres officiels. À ce jour, 129 sont toujours retenues à Gaza, d’après les autorités israéliennes.
Au moins 21.320 personnes, en majorité des femmes, des enfants et des adolescents, ont été tuées dans la bande de Gaza, bombardée sans relâche par l’armée israélienne, selon les autorités du Hamas au pouvoir dans ce territoire palestinien totalement assiégé par Israël.
Une trêve, mise en place du 24 novembre au 1er décembre, avait permis la libération de 105 otages à Gaza, dont 80 en échange de 240 Palestiniens détenus dans des prisons israéliennes.
